Magic Origins banlist update
Over the last three months, Duel Commander events have been more numerous and more populated. The player activity on all media was also very intensive. Such dynamics are very positive for the format and we hope that it will keep on going.
- Mystical Tutor is banned.
Apart from Mystical Tutor, we are currently keeping a strong eye on several other cards. In order to bring you the most and clearer information we can, we created a public “watchlist”, that is divided into two categories, in which you’ll find all the cards that we think endanger the format stability. The Red List will be made of cards which ban is to be soon or very probable, and the Orange List will be made of less dangerous cards, still within acceptable bounds.
- Sensei’s Divining Top is placed on the Red List.
- Dig Through Time and Gaea’s Cradle are placed on the Orange List.
The command zone rule has been modified. A commander will now be able to be put back to the Command Zone instead of going to its owner’s hand. This recent rules change has been added to multiplayer Commander recently. We chose to also have it apply to Duel Commander. This rule (named “Tuck Rule”) becomes now:
Tuck rule :
The commander can now be put back to the command zone any time it should go the the graveyard, to exile, to the library, or in its owner’s hand.
These changes take effect on July 17th, 2015
Your feedback is welcome, as usual. While we read most of the forums out there, the best way to make yourself heard is by writing us HERE.
The next announcement is expected to be on September 28th, 2015.

More information, card by card :
—–
Mystical Tutor:
Mystical Tutor is a card that really favoured combo and control decks to the detriment of aggressive decks, which is the opposite of the re-balancing decisions that our comitee turns to. Some of its interactions were formidable (miracle keyword cards) and it was really making players take too much advantage over the 99 unique cards rule, allowing players to include powerful but situational cards (like Armageddon / Upheaval) with lesser risks. Seeing it banned also opens other unbans in the long run.
Senseï’s Divining Top:
Sensei’s Divining Top was banned in Duel Commander in 2011. We rencently allowed it again, four months ago, in order to evaluate its impact in a new game format. Making it avalaible again didn’t have the expected positive effects. It has the exact opposite. Its power and inavitability greatly improve decks that are already top-tier in the current metagame (that are: control and combo). This card didn’t bring anything positive to the game dynamics, we chose to place it on the Red List. This will probably end with a new ban again, soon.
Dig Through Time (Fouille temporelle) :
Dig Through Time is a card we think is dangerous for the balance of Duel Commander archetypes. Its power has no match and regarding the singleton building rule of the Duel Commander, this card is even more dreadful, for it always offers a lot of possibilities to anyone using it. Its cost reduction is very easily and quickly usable by combo and control decks, that need to be tempered for such a game format. Banning Mystical Tutor allowed us not to take immediate decisions regarding this particular card.
Gaea’s Cradle:
Gaea’s Cradle is a very popular card among Duel Commander decks. It fully integrates into creature-intensive strategies, and for this reason it contributes to the range of this format. On the other side, it is very often a source of unbalanced games, and is relatively unbeatable for other creature-based decks. Its easy playability in Duel Commander makes it really interesting in major tier decks such as Marath, Will of the Wild, Prossh, Skyraider of Kher, or Animar, Soul of Elements. We do not wish to see those decks annihilate any other one form the field. For those reasons, we keep an eye on this card, rather for its effect on the diversity of the format than for its raw power.
Tasigur, The Golden Fang:
We decided to remove Tasigur, The Golden Fang from the Orange List (previously named the Watch List). It is true that we are aware of the power that the card has, but the recent results and performance of Tasigur decks make us think it does not require to be specifically watched. We also promise not to ban it when the next update of this list occurs (which should be for the release of Battle For Zendikar) in order to safely allow people who would want to try building and playing around it to do so.

Mystical Tutor banned but Sensei’s Divining Top is still legal? Rules Committee, please.

How stupid is this? From 1 to 10, i would say 43.
There are so many OP things that should get banned, so many.
Tasigur banned as commander. Survival of the fitest, Bribery, Gilded Drake, Armageddon, Winter orb, Sensei’s divining top, you decide that, somehow, mystical tutor is the only thing that should be banned?
The last ban/unban was the worst, but this one beats that. I’m not saying that mystical tutor should not be banned, i’m saying that there are other things that MUST be banned.
This is a joke, a bad joke.

This seems incredibly stupid on the surface. You guys have really been messing up the banlist lately. Can’t wait to hear the reasoning behind this one…

Any explanation for this choice? The metagame here in Brazil is very different from yours…and I thought the focus should be Tasigur and Animar decks…

+1 tasigur ban

How come Tasigur is not getting banned and it is even removed from the “orange list”?
Control has taken the metagame and i do not think that mystical tutor being banned will change anything.
Tasigur is the strongest commander at the moment, please keep an eye on him.

This is completely not needed.
There Are far more impactful cards that needed to be banned.
Now, you are leaving blue mages without good tutor.
It need reconsidering.

Totally disagree with this choice. Is there any explanation for this? I know blue is unplayable in Modern,if you are willing to kill it in duel commander too,you are in the right spot.
I think Demonic tutor is more powerful than Mystical…I hope you’ll take into consideration changing idea about this.

On ban, on autorise, on ban… fastbond, toupie…

Cmon, mystical tutor now? What a joke.
Your banlist, dear french committee, only serves as an example of poor judgement, misunderstanding of the game and utmost arrogancy if I have ever seen one and it appears that you won´t be happy until dumb aggro decks / burn will takeover the meta.
You guys and gals should be the watchdogs in case some busted game-changing card is printed, not to play the God and limit gaming experience for others.
You are slowly but surely destroying the enviroment of creativity for no reason. When a card is strong – say entomb – you just get to ban it instead of letting people to adjust their decks to handle it. There are ton of responses for such a card/gamestate it creates – from counters and gy hate to spot removal.
Srsly, instead of determining which card goes next by spinning the wheel try to frakking think just for a second.

I really appreciate all the effort and the time you guys put into this project however if you want to accept an hint it would be much better if you actually start to listen ti what the community says, or at some point you will eventually awake and realise you have been left alone playing YOUR game.

You guys have no idea what you’re doing anymore, do you? Unbanning Fastbond and Protean Hulk, come on. And why was Braids banned to begin with? For that matter, why are GIfts Unigiven, Entomb, and Mana Drain banned? Now Mystical Tutor? You do realize you’ve lost all credibility at this point, right? My store is working on devising an updated banlist that actually makes sense and will no longer be using yours.

Always the same excuse. People don’t want to build decks to disrupt strategies. They rather ban cards that need a little effort to deal with. Gaea’s Cradle? Realy. I refuse to accept that there is no way to control the deployment of creatures to the battleground of to sweep
it. I refuse to accept that there is no way other than ban a card. It seems lazy deckbuilding to me. Metagame here in Brazil is very different indeed.

Saludos. Me encanta jugar Comandeer. Gracias.

Why???? yea it’s a SUPER solid card but are we just banning good cards cause they’re in control decks now?

The new Tuck rule is a disadvantage for our metagame (Slovenia) because of the many Skullbriar decks. The Skullbriar can now be simply moved to command zone instead of a players hand and keeps all it counters.

mystical tutor has been banned …. I think master of cruelties + Kaalia is much more decisive for example . I hope SOON remove this ban because this makes no sense to keep a card five years and ban it without having something really amazing in the new collection. This decision really left with fewer options to reanimator decks.

I’ll start by saying Armageddon is one of my top 5 fav magic cards. But Why isn’t Armageddon/ravages banned in this format exactly? In aggressive decks before turn 5 it can easily win the game FOR 4 MANA (turn 2 anafenza, turn 3 Armageddon for instance). In control decks it solidifies a game win almost instantly after it’s played FOR 4 MANA (arbiter + geddon = flipped table). And in my personal experiences that card alone has steered more ppl away from getting into this format. it let’s someone hold a board position meanwhile the other person simply CAN NOY PLAY. They have to lift prayers on high hoping that they top deck lands. You shouldn’t have to run like 5 extra lands in your deck just so you aren’t murdered by that card and you shouldn’t have to slow yourself down and miss land drops because you want to hold on to them in case they have mass land destruction FOR 4 MANA

I like the explanation regarding the Mystical Tutor/Dig Through Time issue, as I think Dig is definitely a more fair card compared to mystical tutor although very powerful. Hopefully both won’t be banned in the end. Although I haven’t really played around with Top since the unbanning, then I don’t mind to see it go as it is slightly expensive and is shoe-horned into pretty much any deck. Finally, is there a place to see the orange list? and the red list? Have tried googling it but can’t seem to find it.

U guys should unban top and mystical tutor. These cards are only problematic in a narset deck. If anything ban narset. Beyond tops first use, it doesnt do much after that. As for mystical tutor, the best thing it can do is miracle turn 2. Yay i got a 4/4 flyer turn 2 or an extra turn to drop 1 more land in play….. Big deal. You might aswell ban personal tutor also. Get rid of the real problem. Ban 1 card narset instead of countless others. Also imo unban tabernacle. Its only good for a control deck vs heavy aggro. Its situational, is in your opening hand 1\15 times. Its a fair answer which is easily overcome. Every edh deck has a wasteland in it or some form of land destro. Its a bs ban that needs to be undone.
