AUGUST 2020 RULES – BANNED/RESTRICTED UPDATE
Hello, everyone! 2020 goes on, and it’s hell of an extraordinary year, in all the good and bad meanings this word bears. Since the last update, it seems like the current metagame adjusted quite accordingly to the defaults that were addressed beforehand. New commanders entered the arena and demonstrated quite an impressive series of results, which shows how much innovation is always possible in Duel Commander. Despite those great news, one little change had to be done this time, which aims at correcting a small unbalance in what was observed since may.
Please stay safe.
Changes:
👉 Rules changes:No changes.
👉 Individual card changes:
Genesis Storm is now banned.
👉 Other changes:
No changes.
These changes apply on August 28, 2020. The next announcement will be published on November 30, 2020 (applying on December 4, 2020).
Until then, we wish you all many good games! 🙂
Further individual explanations:
Genesis Storm
Over the last year, control decks had been struggling to stay in shape, and were most of the time smothered by a very aggressive metagame and overpowered combos, all of these with such good tempos that they couldn’t keep up with the pace and were most of the time forced to kill with random combos themselves.
Last update was among other purposes about balancing the overall playability and performance of control, combo and aggressive strategies. Since then, more blue-and-green-based decks started focusing on new combo kills backed up by control shells, like Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath, or even the older Thrasios, Triton Hero, for instance.
Those decks focus on a new way of structurally over-optimizing control decks, playing around Genesis Storm, a card from 2018 that has a very high affinity with “permanent-type-less“ builds. Genesis Storm becomes a one-card instant kill that dodges most common interactions, including counters and removal, provided the chosen combo only includes two permanents as pieces (such as Thought Lash + Jace, Wielder of Mysteries or Rest in Peace + Helm of Obedience).
Although removing the named commanders could be slowing the take of this card on the format, it would still be used in the future should a new commander or combo be printed. Therefore, Genesis Storm is now banned.

this long since the update dropped and still no comments, pretty clear that people don’t give a shit about this format anymore, congratulations on finally killing it with the most ridiculous decisions imaginable

DC Committee: Control decks are struggling to stay in shape.
Also DC Committee: Let’s ban more of control’s win conditions!

what is your incentive with your ban ? are you looking to kill the 1 vs 1 ? how to explain such a distortion between this ban and the one published by Wizard ?

I have a conflict because my community wants to use this rules but you are banning all the stuff that should be playable like Baral, Chief of Compliance. I don’t know why you ban all the control stuff if it’s one way to play commander and there’s a lot more powerful and you don’t ban them. So return Baral Chief of Compliance, high tide (one of the few blue ramp) and Teferi and other stuff because it doesn’t look like you are thinking this well.

I think Baral, Chief of Compliance should be unbanned for the reason that it can be budget to even les than $50 dollars and also that it can be competitive of course aswell as other more powerful commanders but still is a Tier 2 deck, and those powerful other commander are 25 exactly, over 50 commanders to the same level and even weaker commanders still win against mono blue decks. Why ban all good blue commanders? I don’t think playing mono color should be a restriction yo play commander, I know variety in commander it’s important but even in mono blue decks theres a lot of variety

Sadly, this is what we’ll get for as long as player volunteers comprise the committee instead of an independent group who are banned from participating in tournaments in exchange for employment. There WILL be self-interest involved since prizes would be the only compensation they’d get for their time and efforts.
As long Wizards does not take ownership of this format, nothing will change. There will be no transparency in the decision-making process and no consultation with the community. The lack of accountability for their actions also allows the committee to be arrogant and condescending to players and this shows in their Facebook posts where they show utter lack of professionalism in the face of criticism.
The only real choice is to quit the format or continue and boycott the ban list. My country has already done the latter and I expect more people to finally do the same.

Flash is legal, but Hulk is not. This banlist is so opinionated, so unfounded, so nonsensical.
And there are people who wonder why this format is so dead, lmfao. Time to go back to real EDH people.

Terrible decisions by an opinionated and biased committee. They’re killing this format day by day. They have no data on which to make these decisions.

Years later and I see this comment section is just as hilarious as ever, as people without even the most basic understanding of balance bitch and moan.
Actually, it seems to have gotten even better, with some people now posting « better banlists » that are essentially card-for-card identical, bending over backwards to convince themselves the committee is somehow out to get them even as it makes the same decisions they would.
I know online comment sections are the cesspools of humanity, but y’all really are particularly special.

This ban list is totally unbalanced. Most bans are for mono blue decks and combo decks but still you don’t ban even more powerful cards and combos from other colors except the blue color. This is as most people say, killing the format. Bring back Teferi, Baral, Urza, etc.
Commander should be for everyone and you are killing 1v1 and all the fun.

Why do you whine ?
DC is bad format with not reasonable bans.
But this ban is good. This card win a game by resolving even if opponent have a counterspell

This ban list really sucks and I’ll tell you only a few reasons why. You can’t play anything blue but you leave all the other stuff more overpowered intact. I agree with all the people saying that this ban list really sucks and is completely irrational. The only decks that play here are mono red decks with a tournament meta of 10 mono red decks of 16 in the tournament and imagine whose decks were in the first 3 places (mono red). Also you have in your ‘official’ document that is to 30 HP and your page says something else that is to 20 HP. This is not standard or modern so you better change all the ruling and ban list unbanning all the commanders and staples of the real and loved commander ASAP because this can’t be called commander 1v1.

Guys stop playing this format, the comitee doesn’t give a damn about comments or player’s feedback.
It’s a shame and this banlist is well known for smelling shit.
Well done DC, you’ve kill this format more and more, so just ignore this garbage and have fun with your playgroup and your own banlist.
I’m sad to see that players are still following DC rules.
20 life is shit, this banlist is shit and now only follow multi format banlist.
Have fun guys !

Man, what a weird decision. And it’s been a month past when they were going to do the next announcement. I check in the format every once in a while and just see the oddest decisions on bans. I really think you should take a step back, and maybe reset the banned list to what you want the format to be. Or take a look at CanLander.

I like the current banlist, but I would like to see scheduled updates roughly 1-2 months after each sets release.
